What should you know about measles and mumps virus?

Measles is caused by the measles virus and can bring fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a spreading rash. Mumps is caused by a different virus and may cause tender swelling near the cheeks or jaw. A rash or fever does not identify the virus by itself, because several infections can look similar.

Both infections can pass between people through respiratory droplets and close contact. A person may spread infection before the illness is obvious, so staying away from vulnerable people matters when infection is suspected. If you have fever, a new rash, facial swelling, or feel unwell after exposure, call a GP service before arriving so the team can reduce contact with others.
