Measles vaccine by age

Vaccine timing is planned around the immune response expected at different ages and the protection needed in a child or adult’s setting. The decision also depends on documented previous doses, travel, local guidance, pregnancy and immune health. An unclear record does not prove that vaccination was received.

Measles can spread readily and may be serious, but a rash or fever has many possible causes. Symptoms do not establish measles; exposure and clinical assessment guide the next step.

Gather the vaccination card and ask a GP Consultation or vaccination service to review it. Mention missing records, recent exposure, travel, pregnancy, allergies, immune conditions and medicines. Do not arrange a dose without discussing a known contraindication.

If someone is unwell, describe the fever, rash, cough, eye symptoms and any swollen glands before attending in person. Phone ahead if measles is possible so contact with others can be limited.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe dehydration, seizure, confusion, collapse or unusual difficulty waking. Seek prompt clinical advice for a new fever and rash after exposure, especially in an infant, pregnant person or someone with reduced immunity.

Ask which doses are recorded, which dose is due, whether catch-up is appropriate, what to do after exposure, and which reactions are expected. Confirm where and when to report symptoms after vaccination.
