Measles after MMR vaccination

MMR protects against measles, mumps and rubella by training the immune system. A delayed mild fever, rash or swollen glands can occur as that response develops. These symptoms do not mean the vaccine has caused contagious measles.

A vaccine reaction should not be used to explain away every illness. Breathing difficulty, collapse, seizure, confusion, severe weakness or dehydration needs prompt assessment. Record the date of vaccination and the sequence of symptoms.

Offer fluids, rest and food as tolerated. Monitor temperature, alertness, breathing and urination. Use fever medicine only as advised for the person’s age and circumstances. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, immune suppression, allergies and other vaccines or medicines.

A GP Consultation can clarify whether the pattern fits vaccination or another infection and whether follow-up is needed. Keep the vaccine record available.

Seek emergency help for facial swelling with breathing trouble, collapse, a seizure, confusion, or a person who cannot be woken normally. Arrange prompt review for a persistent high fever, rapidly worsening rash, repeated vomiting or marked deterioration.

Ask how long the expected response may last, which medicine is suitable, whether contact with others needs changing, and when another dose is due. If measles exposure is possible, ask how assessment should be arranged.
