What should you know about MDD depression?

Short answer
MDD depression is major depressive disorder, a treatable condition that can affect mood, thinking, sleep, energy and everyday functioning.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What MDD can look like
A person may lose interest in activities, feel persistently low or empty, or struggle with guilt and hopelessness. Other presentations include fatigue, irritability, feeling anxious, difficulty concentrating, daytime sleepiness, or difficulty sleeping. These symptoms can occur together and may interfere with work, study, relationships, eating or personal care. Depression presents differently from one person to another; a symptom does not by itself establish the diagnosis.
A clinician considers the pattern, duration and effect on daily life, while also checking for physical conditions, medicines, substance use and periods of unusually elevated or activated mood. Depression can coexist with insomnia and anxiety-related symptoms.
Useful next steps
Arrange an appointment with a GP or mental-health professional if low mood or loss of interest is continuing or disrupting ordinary routines. Bring a brief record of sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, mood changes and any medicines or substances. Treatment may include talking therapy, medication, or both; the choice depends on symptoms, medical history, preferences and safety considerations.
Keep a simple daily rhythm while arranging care: get daylight, eat regular meals, take a short walk if able, and stay connected with someone you trust. Do not stop prescribed antidepressants suddenly without medical advice.
When to seek urgent help
Seek urgent help now if you may harm yourself, cannot keep yourself safe, or have thoughts of suicide. Contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department, and tell a trusted person who can stay with you. Urgent assessment is also needed for severe confusion, inability to care for basic needs, or a sudden period of very little sleep with racing thoughts, extreme agitation or risky behaviour.
Questions for your doctor
Could my symptoms fit major depressive disorder, and what else should be checked? Which treatment option matches my goals? How soon should we review progress, and what warning signs mean I should seek help sooner?

Questions people ask
Is MDD the same as feeling sad?
MDD involves a wider pattern of symptoms and functional changes; a clinician assesses the full pattern rather than one emotion.
Can MDD be treated?
Yes. Talking therapy, medication, or a combination may help, with the plan tailored to the person.
