A specialist review may reassess the pathology diagnosis, tumour type, stage, scans and treatment history. The reviewing team may confirm the original plan, suggest another option, identify a useful test, or explain why a treatment is or is not appropriate. A second opinion does not automatically replace the doctor who knows your current symptoms, medicines and day-to-day recovery. It also cannot remove uncertainty when tissue is limited or scans provide incomplete information. Digital pathology may allow pathology images to be shared for review when the required materials and permissions are available.

Gather pathology reports, scan reports and image files, operative notes, treatment summaries, medicine lists, allergy information and a clear timeline of symptoms and previous care. Ask whether original tissue blocks or slides are needed and how they should be transferred. Write down your main questions, including treatment goals, alternatives, expected monitoring and what can safely wait. Share the written opinion with your local team so recommendations can be compared with your current health, local facilities and personal preferences. If surgery is discussed, ask how tumour removal surgery would affect function and recovery.

Do not wait for a remote review if you develop severe breathlessness, chest pain, heavy bleeding, sudden confusion, new weakness, uncontrolled pain, inability to pass urine or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact your local oncology service about time-sensitive treatment decisions, medication reactions or symptoms that change while records are being collected. A second opinion is a planned review, not emergency treatment.
