Short answer

Heart failure means the heart cannot pump or fill as effectively as the body needs, so fluid and breathlessness can develop.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Heart failure means the heart cannot pump or fill as effectively as the body needs, so fluid and breathlessness can develop. It is a long-term condition that can change over time, but assessment and treatment can ease symptoms and reduce strain on the heart.

What heart failure can feel like

The heart’s reduced output may leave you unusually tired, short of breath during activity, or breathless when lying flat. Extra fluid can cause swollen ankles, a cough, or a rapid change in how tight your shoes feel. Some people notice palpitations. High blood pressure and atrial fibrillation can contribute to heart failure, although a symptom does not by itself identify its cause.

A clinician may review your symptoms, blood pressure, medicines, heart rhythm and fluid balance. Tests can help show how the heart is working and whether another problem is contributing.

Useful next steps

Arrange a clinical review if new breathlessness, ankle swelling, reduced exercise tolerance or persistent fatigue is affecting daily life. Take prescribed medicines as directed, keep a note of symptoms, and bring a list of medicines and supplements to appointments. Do not stop a heart medicine without advice. A chronic disease review can help check treatment, kidney function, blood pressure and day-to-day support.

When to seek urgent help

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, especially at rest; chest pressure or pain; fainting; new confusion; blue or grey lips; or a very fast, irregular heartbeat with weakness. Sit upright while waiting for help and avoid driving yourself. Contact a clinician promptly if swelling, cough or breathlessness is steadily worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what type of heart failure is being considered, which symptoms should trigger a same-day call, how to monitor fluid-related changes, and whether your current medicines need review. You can also ask whether blood pressure or an irregular rhythm may be contributing.

Questions people ask

Is heart failure the same as a heart attack?

No. A heart attack is a sudden interruption of blood flow to heart muscle; heart failure describes reduced heart function and may develop gradually or after other heart problems.

Can symptoms vary from day to day?

Yes. Activity, illness, salt and fluid balance, medicines and heart rhythm can all affect symptoms, so a pattern can be useful to share during review.
