Short answer

McKenzie Method physiotherapy uses an assessment of movement and symptom response to guide personalised exercises and self-management.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

It is
An assessment-led movement and self-management approach.
It is not
A single routine suitable for every person.
Track
Pain location, movement, strength, and function.

How sessions work

A clinician takes your history, checks movement, and observes whether repeated motions or sustained positions change your symptoms. The findings may guide a home programme, posture advice, activity changes, and follow-up checks. The method is not a single exercise or a diagnosis; the same movement may suit one person and irritate another. It can be considered for selected musculoskeletal presentations, including some neck, back, shoulder, or limb complaints. Examples in a physiotherapy setting may include Achilles Tendinitis, Ankle Sprain, Cervical Radiculopathy, or Cervical Spondylosis, but the appropriate plan depends on examination findings.

Making the plan useful

Describe where symptoms travel, what positions change them, and whether you notice weakness, altered sensation, or loss of function. Practise only the movements and frequency prescribed, using the technique demonstrated. Keep daily activity within tolerable limits and review your response rather than forcing a stretch or bend. Report symptoms that spread, become sharper, or affect strength. Your clinician may modify the direction, dose, or exercise as your response changes. For a condition such as Ankylosing Spondylitis or a Baker's Cyst, the wider medical plan remains relevant; one exercise approach may not address every need.

When assessment is urgent

Seek urgent care for sudden severe weakness, new bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the saddle area, a major injury with deformity, or a hot swollen joint with fever. Seek prompt review when pain is rapidly worsening, function is declining, or symptoms persist despite the agreed plan. Do not continue an exercise that clearly increases neurological symptoms or causes a new loss of movement.

Questions for your clinician

Ask what finding supports the exercise direction, how to measure a helpful response, which symptoms require stopping, and when the programme should be reviewed. Ask how the approach fits with your diagnosis, medicines, work demands, and other rehabilitation needs.

Questions people ask

Is the McKenzie Method only for back pain?

No. It may be used for selected neck, back, and limb presentations, but suitability depends on the examination and how symptoms respond.

Can I learn the exercises online?

General examples cannot replace an individual assessment. A physiotherapist can check technique, choose a direction, and explain when to stop.
