What should you know about maxitrol for stye?

Maxitrol may be prescribed for selected eye conditions, but it is not suitable for every stye and should be used only after a clinician checks the eye. The product combines an antibiotic with a corticosteroid, so unsupervised use can mask or worsen some infections.

A stye is a tender, localised lump near an eyelid lash or gland. Many improve with simple measures, while others need examination to distinguish a stye from a blocked gland, eyelid inflammation or another eye problem. Maxitrol is not a general-purpose treatment for every red or irritated eye. Eye Discharge or Red Eye can have causes that need different care.

Use a clean, warm compress over the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeat regularly, and avoid squeezing or piercing the lump. Keep hands clean, pause eye makeup and do not share towels. If Maxitrol has been prescribed, follow the exact directions, avoid touching the tube or dropper to the eye, and do not share it. Ask a pharmacist or GP if you are unsure whether the formulation is an ointment or drops.

Arrange a GP Consultation if the lump is not improving, keeps returning, interferes with vision or is associated with substantial discharge. Seek urgent eye care for vision loss or change, severe eye pain, pain with eye movement, marked swelling around the eye, light sensitivity, fever or rapidly spreading redness.
