What should you know about maxillary chondrosarcoma?

Short answer

Maxillary chondrosarcoma is a cartilage-forming cancer affecting the upper jaw, where its position can influence symptoms, imaging, surgery and other treatment decisions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the diagnosis describes

The maxilla forms much of the upper jaw, the roof of the mouth and part of the area around the nose and eye socket. A tumour there may cause a slowly enlarging swelling, facial pressure, pain, loose teeth, changes in the bite, nasal blockage, nosebleeds, or numbness. These symptoms can have other causes, so they do not by themselves establish cancer. Imaging helps show the tumour’s boundaries and relationship to teeth, sinuses, the orbit and nearby nerves. A biopsy examines tissue to confirm the diagnosis and its grade.

How care is planned

Care is usually coordinated by a specialist team that may include head and neck surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, radiation specialists, dental professionals and reconstruction experts. The team considers the tumour’s grade, size, exact position and whether it has spread before recommending a plan. Surgery may remove the tumour with a margin of surrounding tissue and can be followed by reconstruction. Proton therapy or another form of radiation may be discussed when radiation is appropriate, with attention to nearby sensitive structures. Ask about dental preparation, nutrition, speech, swallowing and recovery support.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment for a persistent upper-jaw lump, unexplained tooth loosening, facial numbness, recurrent nosebleeds, or nasal or mouth symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing facial swelling, trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, heavy bleeding, new vision changes or severe uncontrolled pain. During treatment, promptly report fever, worsening wound problems, dehydration, breathing difficulty or new neurological symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Ask where the tumour is located, what the biopsy shows, what grade means for your plan, whether surgery is recommended, how reconstruction may affect speech or eating, and whether proton therapy or another radiation approach has a role. Ask which symptoms require same-day advice.

Questions people ask

Does an upper-jaw lump always indicate maxillary chondrosarcoma?

No. Upper-jaw lumps and dental or nasal symptoms have many possible causes. Persistent or changing symptoms need clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Can surgery be part of treatment?

Yes. When appropriate, tumour removal surgery may be used, sometimes with reconstruction and other treatments based on the tumour’s features.
