Matrix Dandruff Treatment: What to Know

Dandruff produces visible flakes and may cause an itchy scalp, but similar symptoms can occur with seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, contact irritation, or infection. Treatment therefore depends on the scale, redness, oiliness, itch, affected areas, and duration. A medicated shampoo may loosen scale and reduce organisms or inflammation; a topical antifungal treatment may be selected when fungal or yeast involvement is suspected. The clinician may need to inspect the scalp, hairline, ears, or eyebrows rather than treating every flake as the same condition.

Apply the shampoo to the scalp, not only the hair lengths, and leave it on for the advised contact time before rinsing. Use the recommended schedule and avoid adding several irritating products at once. Gentle washing, careful rinsing, and avoiding scratching can reduce irritation and broken skin. Do not share combs, brushes, or hats when infection is a possibility. If the scalp improves and then relapses, ask whether a maintenance schedule is appropriate rather than stopping and restarting products unpredictably.

Arrange review for thick plaques, bleeding, hair loss, pus, marked tenderness, swollen glands, or a rash spreading beyond the scalp. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly worsening redness, facial swelling, or severe pain. Persistent flaking despite correct use of treatment also warrants reassessment because the diagnosis or product may need to change.
