What should you know about maternal exhaustion?

Short answer
Maternal exhaustion is profound tiredness after pregnancy or birth that may need rest, practical support and medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What maternal exhaustion can mean
Sleep is often interrupted by feeding, settling and recovery from birth. Emotional strain, limited help, pain, dehydration or not eating regularly can add to the load. Fatigue can also accompany anaemia, thyroid problems, infection or depression, so a clinician may ask about bleeding, mood, sleep, appetite and medicines. Anaemia is one possible contributor; it does not explain every case.
What you can do now
Tell someone you trust exactly which tasks you need covered, and accept help with meals, errands and baby care. Rest when a safe opportunity appears, drink regularly and choose nourishing foods. Avoid using alcohol as a sleep aid. Arrange a primary-care or maternity review if tiredness is persistent, worsening or stopping you from caring for yourself. A clinician can check your history and decide whether examination or blood tests are useful.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for breathlessness at rest, chest pain, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding, a high fever or thoughts of harming yourself or the baby. Prompt review is also sensible for marked weakness, dizziness, palpitations or inability to keep fluids down. Do not drive if exhaustion makes you unsafe.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms could relate to anaemia, mood, sleep disruption or another illness; which checks are appropriate; and how to make a safe recovery plan while feeding or caring for your baby.
