Mastitis without pain: what to know

Pain is only one possible feature of breast inflammation. You may notice a warm area, swelling, a firm patch, altered skin texture, nipple discharge, or a change in breast shape. Some people mainly feel unwell or develop a fever. Mastitis can occur during breastfeeding and at other times. Because several breast conditions can look alike, the absence of pain does not confirm or exclude mastitis. An examination helps distinguish inflammation from a cyst, blocked duct, skin problem, or another cause.

Book an appointment if a breast change is new, persistent, or getting worse. Note when it began, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and any fever, discharge, recent injury, piercing, pumping, or medicines. Do not squeeze a lump or repeatedly massage the area.
