Mastitis while breastfeeding: what it means

Mastitis can affect one part of the breast while you are feeding. The area may be tender and firm, and the skin may appear flushed. Some people also develop chills, body aches, tiredness, or a raised temperature. It may follow a change in feeding frequency, pressure on the breast, nipple damage, or difficulty with milk transfer. These symptoms can overlap with other breast conditions, so a persistent lump or worsening change deserves an examination.

Feed your baby responsively and avoid trying to force the breast completely empty. If a feed is too painful, express only enough to soften the breast. A cool compress, supportive bra, rest, and ordinary fluids according to thirst may help. Avoid deep massage, vibrating devices, and sudden increases in pumping, which can irritate tissue. Check positioning and attachment with a lactation professional if feeding hurts or the baby struggles to transfer milk.

Arrange medical advice if you feel generally ill, develop feverish symptoms, notice spreading redness, or do not begin to improve after supportive measures. Seek urgent care for severe illness, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening swelling.
