What are the stages of mastitis?

Short answer
Mastitis may begin with breast inflammation, then cause stronger local or whole-body symptoms; persistent or worsening changes need medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early pattern
- Local tenderness, warmth, redness, swelling, or firmness may appear first.
- Progression
- Chills, fatigue, aches, or feverishness can develop as inflammation increases.
- Persistent lump
- An enlarging or ongoing lump needs clinical assessment.
How symptoms may unfold
There is no single timetable or sequence for mastitis. Early changes may include a tender or firm patch, warmth, swelling, redness, or pain during feeding. As inflammation increases, the breast can become more uncomfortable and you may feel tired, achy, chilled, or feverish. Some people improve before symptoms become severe; others need assessment because the problem is not settling.
A later concern is a persistent, increasingly painful lump or a soft, fluid-feeling area, which can indicate a breast abscess. This is not something to diagnose by touch alone. A clinician may examine the breast and decide whether further evaluation is needed.
What to do at each point
At the first signs, continue comfortable breastfeeding or gentle expression and avoid abrupt weaning, deep massage, tight bras, and unnecessary pumping. Use cool measures for swelling, rest, and drink to thirst. Check feeding position and latch, especially if the nipple is damaged or feeds have recently changed. Breast pain and painful breastfeeding can make the cycle harder; a lactation consultation may help correct the mechanical cause. Reassess whether symptoms are easing rather than waiting for a fixed stage.
When to move from self-care to review
Contact a healthcare professional promptly if symptoms intensify, fever or chills develop, redness spreads, or a lump persists. Arrange review if there is no clear improvement or if feeding and hydration are becoming difficult. Seek urgent care for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing trouble, or inability to drink.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which stage your symptoms resemble, what improvement should look like, whether a lump needs imaging or drainage, and how to continue feeding safely. Share when the symptoms began and how they have changed.

When should I stop waiting for improvement?
Seek review when symptoms worsen, a lump persists, fever develops, or there is no clear improvement with supportive care.
