Why fever may be absent

Fever is only one possible sign of mastitis. Early inflammation may stay local to the breast, causing a sore, warm, firm or reddened patch without affecting your whole body. A lack of fever does not prove that the problem is minor or that it is not mastitis.

Breast pain can also result from pressure, nipple injury, a blocked area, a cyst or another breast condition. The pattern, duration and examination findings help separate these possibilities. What you can do

Seek prompt care for increasing redness, warmth, pain or swelling, even if your temperature is normal. Contact a clinician if you develop chills, fever, weakness, a persistent lump or nipple discharge. Get urgent help if you become severely unwell, faint, confused or short of breath.
