Natural treatment for mastitis

Short answer
Gentle supportive care may ease mastitis symptoms, but natural measures cannot replace assessment when inflammation is severe or worsening.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cool packs
- May reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Vigorous massage
- Can aggravate irritated breast tissue.
Understanding mastitis
Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue. It may cause a tender, warm, swollen or reddened area, and some people feel tired or feverish. Inflammation can follow milk stasis, pressure, nipple damage or infection. Symptoms alone cannot show whether antibiotics, drainage or another treatment is needed.
Natural does not automatically mean gentle or suitable. Essential oils, herbal products, strong heat and vigorous massage may irritate skin or tissue, interact with medicines, or delay care. A painful breast or painful breastfeeding may also have a cause other than mastitis.
Supportive measures
Rest, drink to thirst, use cool packs for swelling, and wear a supportive bra that does not compress the breast. If you are breastfeeding, feed or express in a comfortable pattern without trying to empty the breast forcefully. Check attachment and positioning; a [Lactation Consultation](/treatments/pregnancy-and-birth-care/lactation-consultation/) can provide practical help.
Keep the skin clean and observe the affected area rather than repeatedly massaging it. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is safe for you, particularly if pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic to medicines or taking regular treatment.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are worsening, redness is spreading, pain is strong, or you feel feverish, chilled or unusually weak. Seek urgent help for severe illness, confusion, fainting, or difficulty breathing. A lump that persists, recurrent inflammation or nipple discharge needs examination.
Questions for your doctor
Can supportive care alone be appropriate for my symptoms? How will we know if infection or an abscess is developing? Which medicines and feeding changes are safe for me?
