Mastitis months after weaning

After weaning, milk production gradually changes and some breast tissue may remain active for a while. A blocked area, skin irritation or infection can cause local tenderness, warmth, redness and swelling. A firm area may also reflect a cyst, hormonal breast change or another condition, so timing after weaning does not identify the cause by itself.

Mastitis can present with breast pain even when a person is no longer feeding. A clinician may ask about milk leakage, nipple changes, recent injury, medicines and whether the area is growing or settling.

Arrange a clinical examination rather than repeatedly pressing the area. Wear comfortable clothing, use a cool pack for discomfort, and take only pain relief that is suitable for you. Note any redness, discharge, fever, skin dimpling or change in the lump.

Do not restart pumping solely to clear a lump unless a clinician or lactation specialist advises it. Seek prompt care if the breast is hot, increasingly red or painful, or you develop fever, chills or weakness. Seek urgent help if you feel severely ill or have breathing difficulty. A lump, nipple discharge, skin change or swelling that persists after inflammation settles needs timely assessment.
