What does mastitis look like?

The affected area may be red or darker than surrounding skin, warmer to touch and swollen. It can feel firm, sore or heavy, and the nipple may be sensitive. Some people also develop fever, chills, tiredness or aches. Mastitis commonly presents with breast pain, but skin appearance varies across skin tones and a clinician may need to examine the area.

Note when the change began and whether the red or swollen area is expanding. Rest, drink to thirst and use a cool compress. If breastfeeding, feed or express comfortably and avoid forceful massage or pressure. A lactation consultation can help with positioning and milk removal. Arrange prompt medical advice when redness spreads, pain increases, a firm area grows, fever or chills appear, or you feel generally unwell. Persistent nipple scaling, discharge, skin dimpling or a lump that remains after inflammation settles also needs examination. Seek emergency help for collapse, confusion or breathing difficulty.
