What should you know about mastitis in young females?

Mastitis may make part of the breast feel warm, tender, swollen, or firm. The skin can look red, and fever or a general sick feeling may develop when infection is present. Causes vary and can include irritated or broken skin, pressure, or blocked breast ducts during breastfeeding. A painful breast change can resemble other conditions, so the pattern, examination, and response to care matter.

Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms are new, worsening, or not settling. Keep the area clean, avoid tight pressure and vigorous massage, and choose a supportive but comfortable bra. A cool compress may reduce swelling. If breastfeeding, a lactation consultant can check positioning and milk removal; do not stop or start medicines without professional advice.

Get prompt care for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, pus, severe swelling, or pain that is becoming difficult to manage. Seek review for a lump, discharge, or skin change that persists. Urgent attention is especially appropriate when you feel faint, confused, or unusually weak.
