Mastitis in cats: symptoms to watch

Look for a mammary gland that is firmer, warmer, redder, or larger than the others. The cat may flinch, hide, groom the area repeatedly, or resist nursing kittens. Milk can appear thick, bloody, pus-like, or otherwise different from usual. The skin may become bruised-looking, ulcerated, or dark. More general signs include reduced appetite, low energy, feverish behaviour, dehydration, or less interest in kittens. A cat can have a serious gland infection without showing every sign, so a new change deserves attention.

Compare the affected gland with the others without squeezing it. Record when the change began and whether it is spreading, and take a photograph for the veterinarian if safe. Keep the cat clean, dry, and quiet. Do not puncture a swelling, express milk forcefully, use household remedies, or give human medicine. Phone a veterinary clinic for advice about examination, kitten feeding, and any prescribed care. Follow-up matters if the first treatment does not improve the area.

Arrange same-day care for increasing heat, swelling, pain, redness, abnormal milk, an open wound, or a cat that stops eating or caring for kittens. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe weakness, breathing trouble, repeated vomiting, or rapidly darkening tissue. These signs can indicate a deeper infection or tissue injury and should not be monitored casually at home.

Ask which symptoms suggest infection, whether the kittens need separate feeding, how to protect the gland, what improvement should look like, and when a recheck is required.
