Mastitis and cow’s milk

How the structures involved in Mastitis differ from normal

Short answer

Mastitis does not usually make breast milk unsafe for your baby, so feeding can often continue while you arrange care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Breast milk
Mastitis does not usually make it unsafe for your baby.
Cow’s milk
It does not treat mastitis or clear a breast duct.
Warning signs
Fever, spreading redness, severe illness, or a growing lump needs medical advice.

What mastitis means for milk

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue, most often discussed in people who are breastfeeding. The milk may look or taste slightly different for a while, and your baby may react to that change. Those changes do not automatically mean the milk has spoiled or should be discarded. A sore, red, warm area can happen with inflammation even when there is no bacterial infection.

Cow’s milk is not a treatment for mastitis, and drinking it does not clear a breast duct. If you mean giving cow’s milk to a young baby instead of breast milk, ask the child’s clinician about age-appropriate feeding. For the breastfeeding parent, the practical priorities are comfort, effective attachment, and checking symptoms rather than changing the baby’s milk without advice.

Feeding and comfort steps

Continue breastfeeding or expressing if it feels manageable, but do not pump repeatedly to force the breast empty. Offer feeds according to your baby’s cues, check that the latch is deep and comfortable, and express only enough to soften uncomfortable fullness. Cold packs wrapped in cloth, rest, fluids, and a supportive bra without tight pressure may help. Do not use deep massage, strong suction, or aggressive heat over the tender area.

If pain makes feeding difficult, a lactation consultant can assess positioning and attachment. [Lactation Consultation](/treatments/pregnancy-and-birth-care/lactation-consultation/) may also help you make a plan for expressing while the breast settles. Keep normal hygiene, but there is no need to wash the nipple repeatedly or discard milk solely because you have mastitis.

When to get medical help

Contact a clinician promptly if you have fever, chills, flu-like illness, spreading redness, worsening pain, or increasing swelling. A lump that becomes larger, softer in the centre, or very painful may need assessment for an abscess. Seek urgent help if you feel faint, confused, severely unwell, or cannot drink enough to stay hydrated. If the breast is not improving after a short period of supportive care, an examination can help decide whether antibiotics, drainage, or another approach is needed.

For related symptoms, see [Breast Pain](/symptoms/breast-pain/) and [Painful Breastfeeding](/symptoms/painful-breastfeeding/). These symptoms can have several causes, so use the pattern of illness and examination findings to guide treatment.

Questions to take to an appointment

Ask whether you can continue feeding with your symptoms, whether your medicines are compatible with breastfeeding, and whether the breast needs imaging or drainage. Mention any change in the milk, your baby’s response during feeds, fever or chills, and how quickly the symptoms developed. Ask what improvement should look like and when you should be rechecked.

Questions people ask

Can my baby drink milk from a breast with mastitis?

Feeding can often continue because mastitis does not usually make breast milk unsafe. Get advice if pain prevents feeding or your baby refuses feeds.

Will cow’s milk cure mastitis?

No. Cow’s milk does not clear breast inflammation or a blocked duct. Use supportive care and seek medical assessment when symptoms are severe or persistent.
