Mastitis and chills

Chills are a whole-body response and may occur with fever during an inflammatory episode. They can appear alongside a hot, swollen, painful, or reddened part of the breast. The combination does not by itself prove that bacteria are present, but it is more concerning than a small area of breast tenderness alone. Tell the clinician when the chills started, whether they come in waves, and whether you can drink, rest, and care for yourself.

Check how you feel rather than trying to force the breast to empty. If breastfeeding, continue or express gently as tolerated, while avoiding vigorous massage and unnecessary pumping. Rest, drink to thirst, wear loose supportive clothing, and use cool compresses for swelling. Keep a note of temperature readings if available, breast changes, medicines taken, and whether symptoms are improving. A clinician may recommend pain relief or antibiotics after assessing the pattern.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly when chills occur with mastitis symptoms, particularly if you feel weak, feverish, or increasingly ill. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, inability to keep fluids down, or fast deterioration. A worsening lump or a soft, very tender swelling can need assessment for a collection of infected fluid.
