What should you know about mastitis care?

Mastitis is inflammation of the breast. It may feel like a localised tender lump or firm area, with warmth, redness and swelling. Some people also develop fever, chills or body aches. In breastfeeding, inflammation can follow milk-flow changes, pressure or nipple trauma; outside breastfeeding, other causes are possible. Similar symptoms can occur with a collection of pus or another breast problem, so ongoing symptoms need assessment.

Rest and use a cool compress wrapped in cloth to ease swelling. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid deep massage, squeezing or repeated attempts to empty the breast. If breastfeeding, continue a normal, comfortable pattern and check the baby’s latch. A lactation consultation may reduce friction and help protect milk flow. A clinician can recommend suitable pain relief and decide whether antibiotics or drainage are needed.

Seek medical advice for fever, rapidly spreading redness, worsening pain, pus-like discharge or a lump that is not improving. Arrange review when symptoms persist, recur or begin outside breastfeeding. Get urgent help if you feel faint, confused, breathless or severely unwell.

Ask how to distinguish inflammation from infection, whether an examination or imaging is needed, and which care steps are safe for your situation. If you are feeding, ask whether your medicines and feeding plan can continue together.
