What should you know about mastitis can breastfeed?

Mastitis causes inflammation in breast tissue and may lead to a sore, warm, swollen or red area. Feeling feverish, tired or achy can happen as well. Feeding does not usually need to stop automatically. Pain may make feeding difficult, and a shallow latch, pressure from clothing or an abrupt change in feeding can contribute to breast discomfort.

Feed or express in your usual pattern if you can, following your baby’s cues rather than trying to force extra milk removal. Check positioning and latch, and change positions if one area remains under pressure. Use cool packs after feeds, rest and drink to thirst. A lactation consultation can help with latch, pumping technique and a plan that protects your comfort. Ask a clinician which pain relief is suitable while feeding.

Contact a clinician promptly if fever, chills, spreading redness or worsening pain develops, or if you feel increasingly unwell. A persistent firm area or a lump with central softness may need assessment. Seek urgent care for faintness, confusion or severe weakness. Do not wait for feeding to become impossible before asking for help.

Ask whether you can continue your current feeding plan, which medicines are compatible with breastfeeding, and how to recognise an abscess. Ask for practical help if your baby’s latch hurts or pumping is causing nipple injury.
