What should you know about mastitis but not pregnant?

Outside pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast inflammation may follow irritation, a blocked duct, skin damage or an infection. Symptoms can include a painful, warm or red area, swelling, nipple discharge or a firm patch. These signs can overlap with other breast conditions, so the symptom alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may examine the breast and arrange imaging when needed.

Wear a supportive but non-tight bra, avoid squeezing the area and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Note when the pain, redness, discharge or lump began and whether it is changing. Do not start leftover antibiotics or apply irritating products. Breast pain can have several causes, and a clinician can select treatment after examining you.

Arrange prompt care for fever, spreading redness, worsening swelling, pus-like discharge, a new or enlarging lump, or skin that becomes dimpled. Seek urgent help if you feel severely ill, faint or confused. If symptoms do not settle, return, or affect only one area repeatedly, make an appointment even without fever.

Ask what may be causing the inflammation, whether you need an ultrasound or other examination, and what changes should trigger review. Tell the clinician about recent procedures, nipple piercing, medicines, smoking, skin problems and any history of breast conditions.
