What should you know about mastitis buffalo?

Mastitis can develop when milk is not draining comfortably, when the breast is irritated, or when bacteria enter through damaged skin around the nipple. One area may feel firm, sore or hot, and the skin can look red. Chills, tiredness or a fever can occur. Mastitis may happen during breastfeeding, but breast inflammation can have other causes too.

Rest, drink to thirst and use a cool compress for comfort. Continue normal feeding or expressing if you are breastfeeding, without trying to empty the breast aggressively. Check that the baby’s position and latch are comfortable; a lactation consultation can help identify pressure or friction that is worsening symptoms. Avoid tight clothing and deep massage, which may increase swelling. A clinician can decide whether medicine or assessment for a collection of pus is needed.

Seek prompt medical advice for a high fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked weakness, or a lump that becomes softer in the centre. Arrange an assessment if symptoms are not easing, return repeatedly, or occur when you are not breastfeeding. Emergency care is appropriate if you feel faint, confused or seriously unwell.

Ask whether your symptoms fit inflammatory or infectious mastitis, whether you need an examination or imaging, and which pain relief is suitable for you. If you are breastfeeding, ask whether your medicines are compatible with feeding and whether a lactation consultation would improve comfort.
