How long do antibiotics for mastitis take?

Not every case of mastitis is caused by bacteria, so antibiotics are not suitable for every episode. A clinician considers your symptoms, examination findings, breastfeeding or weaning history, allergies, other medicines, and relevant health conditions before prescribing. The expected response also matters: pain, redness, and feeling unwell should begin moving in the right direction after treatment starts, although tenderness may take longer to settle. Persistent or recurrent symptoms can mean that the diagnosis or treatment needs review.

Take the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and do not share it, save it, or change the schedule without speaking with the prescriber. Ask what to do if you miss a dose, vomit after taking it, or develop diarrhoea or a rash. Continue gentle comfort measures such as rest, a supportive bra, and cool packs through cloth. If you are breastfeeding, ask whether the medicine is compatible with feeding and whether a lactation consultation could help with milk removal or latch.

Contact the prescriber if symptoms are not improving as expected, worsen after treatment begins, or return soon after the course ends. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion, severe weakness, or rapidly spreading redness. A persistent lump or collection may need examination and sometimes a different procedure or treatment. Do not extend, stop, or restart antibiotics on your own.

Ask what diagnosis the antibiotic is treating, when you should expect improvement, how long to take it, and which side effects require help. Tell the prescriber about allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, previous antibiotics, and every medicine or supplement you use.
