What should you know about mastectomy to prevent breast cancer?

How the structures involved in Breast Cancer differ from normal

Short answer

Mastectomy to prevent breast cancer is risk-reducing surgery that removes breast tissue before cancer develops, but the decision depends on inherited risk, family history, imaging and personal preferences.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the operation means

Risk-reducing mastectomy may be considered when a person has a substantially increased chance of breast cancer, such as from an inherited gene change or a strong family pattern. It removes as much breast tissue as the surgical plan allows; it does not remove every breast cell, so it cannot promise that cancer will never occur. The operation can be bilateral or involve one breast, depending on the risk assessment. Some people choose reconstruction, while others use external prostheses or remain flat. Nipple-sparing or skin-sparing approaches may be options for selected patients.

How to prepare

Start with a breast specialist or genetics team to clarify your estimated risk and alternatives, which may include enhanced screening with mammography or breast MRI. A breast biopsy may be needed if imaging finds an area that requires diagnosis. Discuss the effect on sensation, body image, breastfeeding, scars, reconstruction timing and possible need for further surgery. Ask about stopping medicines that affect bleeding, arranging help at home, drain care and the usual return to movement. If cancer is found rather than prevented, the treatment plan may include staging tests and additional therapy.

When to seek care

Before surgery, promptly report a new breast change, bloody discharge, skin distortion or a lump so it can be assessed rather than assumed to be part of inherited risk. After surgery, contact the surgical team for fever, spreading redness, worsening swelling, fluid or pus from the wound, uncontrolled pain, sudden shortness of breath or a painful swollen arm. Urgent breathing trouble or chest pain needs emergency care.

Questions for your doctor

Which finding makes my breast cancer risk higher, and how certain is that assessment? What screening or medication options remain if I do not have surgery? Which mastectomy and reconstruction approaches fit my anatomy? How might surgery affect sensation, appearance and future imaging? Who will coordinate genetics, breast surgery and reconstruction?

Questions people ask

Does risk-reducing mastectomy remove all breast cancer risk?

No. It removes most breast tissue but cannot remove every breast cell, so some risk remains and follow-up advice still matters.

Is reconstruction required after preventive mastectomy?

No. Reconstruction is optional; choices include immediate or delayed reconstruction, an external prosthesis or no reconstruction.
