Mastectomy tank tops: what to know

Mastectomy tank tops may have built-in pockets for an external prosthesis, gentle support, wider straps and fabric designed to reduce rubbing. Some are intended for everyday wear; others are made for sleep, exercise or recovery. They do not replace wound dressings or clinical review.

Choose clothing based on healing, comfort and whether you use a silicone prosthesis, a soft temporary form, or no form. Breast Reconstruction can change the type of support you prefer. After Mastectomy, scars and altered sensation can make seams, tight bands or rough fabric uncomfortable.

Wait until your surgical team says the garment will not disturb the incision. Look for breathable fabric, adjustable straps, a pocket that keeps the form steady, and enough room for dressings or swelling. Try it while sitting and moving your arms; it should support without digging into the chest or shoulder.

Wash it as directed and keep a clean spare available. Remove it if you notice rubbing, persistent redness, pain or increased swelling. Ask about a lighter garment for activity and about Lymphoedema Therapy if the arm or chest feels heavy or tight.

Contact your care team for worsening wound pain, redness, warmth, drainage, separation, fever, or swelling that does not settle after removing the garment. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or uncontrolled bleeding. A clothing problem can be adjusted; a wound concern needs clinical assessment.
