Silicone prosthesis after mastectomy: what to know

The prosthesis sits against the chest or in a pocketed mastectomy bra. Its weight and shape can help clothing fit more evenly, and it can be removed whenever you choose. It does not replace breast tissue, treat cancer, or close a surgical wound.

Some people use a soft temporary form while the chest heals before trying silicone. Others use a prosthesis long term or choose Breast Reconstruction instead. The right choice depends on comfort, skin healing, activity and personal preference after Mastectomy.

Wait for your clinical team to confirm that the incision is healed enough for fitting. A specialist fitter can check size, shape, bra support and pressure points while you move and sit. Begin with shorter periods of wear, especially in warm weather, and remove it if the skin becomes sore.

Wash the prosthesis according to its instructions and keep it away from sharp objects or excessive heat. Check the skin for rubbing, redness or a rash. Ask about a lighter form for exercise and about Lymphoedema Therapy if arm or chest swelling develops.

Ask for a review if the prosthesis causes persistent pressure, pain, skin breakdown, new swelling, or difficulty moving your shoulder. Contact your surgical team for wound redness, warmth, drainage, separation or fever. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or uncontrolled bleeding.
