What the injection changes

The masseter muscles sit at the sides of the jaw and help with chewing. Injections of [Botulinum Toxin Type A](/materials/botulinum-toxin-type-a/) temporarily reduce signals that make the targeted muscle contract. As the muscle becomes less active, it may gradually look less prominent, creating a narrower appearance in people whose lower-face width is mainly muscular.

This treatment does not remove bone, dissolve fat, lift loose skin, or change the natural shape of the chin. Facial balance, bite, chewing habits, and muscle size all affect the result. Unevenness, chewing fatigue, tenderness, bruising, or a change in smile movement are possible concerns to discuss.

Preparing and planning

Choose a qualified medical professional who can assess your jaw while you clench and relax. Tell them about dental problems, difficulty swallowing, neuromuscular conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergies, and medicines that may increase bruising. Avoid rubbing or pressing the injection sites immediately afterward according to the instructions you receive.
