Massaging a Bartholin cyst: what to know

A Bartholin cyst is a fluid-filled swelling near the vaginal opening caused by blockage of a gland duct. It may be small and painless, or it may become infected and develop into an abscess with intense tenderness, redness, warmth, and pus. Pressing the lump cannot reliably clear the blockage and may damage fragile skin. A clinician can distinguish a simple cyst from infection or another cause of Vulval Pain.

Avoid squeezing, puncturing, or repeatedly pressing the swelling. Keep the area clean, wear loose clothing, and ask a clinician whether warm water soaks are suitable for your symptoms. Do not apply medicines or antiseptics inside the vagina unless advised. Arrange prompt assessment if the lump is rapidly enlarging, painful when sitting or walking, red or hot, draining pus, or associated with fever. Seek urgent help if you feel faint, become very unwell, or cannot pass urine. A new or persistent lump after menopause should be examined even if it is not painful.
