What should you know about massage and sports therapy?

Short answer
Sports massage can support comfort and movement around training, but it does not replace diagnosis or rehabilitation for an injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How sports therapy is used
Sports massage may use broad strokes, focused pressure, and movement-based techniques for muscles used in a sport. The aim can be to reduce a sense of tightness, improve comfortable movement, or help an athlete prepare for or settle after activity. It is different from treating the cause of a torn muscle, a significant impact injury, or a problem inside a joint. A [Muscle Strain](/conditions/muscle-strain/) and a [Muscle Contusion](/conditions/muscle-contusion/) need assessment when pain, bruising, weakness, or loss of function is more than expected.
Using it alongside training
Tell the practitioner what you are training for, where symptoms began, and whether there was a sudden event. Avoid asking for forceful work over a fresh injury, open skin, significant bruising, or a swollen area. A session should leave you able to follow a sensible activity plan; it should not be used to push through altered walking or persistent sharp pain. Discuss warm-up, load changes, mobility, strengthening, sleep, and hydration as part of recovery. For gradual post-exercise discomfort, see [Muscle Soreness After Exercise](/symptoms/muscle-soreness-after-exercise/); persistent lower-leg symptoms can be reviewed under [Calf Pain](/symptoms/calf-pain/).
When to stop and seek assessment
Seek prompt medical advice for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, extensive bruising, inability to bear weight, or a limb that looks misshapen after injury. Calf swelling with warmth, tenderness, or breathlessness needs urgent assessment rather than massage. New weakness, numbness, fever, or pain that keeps worsening also warrants evaluation.
Questions for your doctor
Is this training soreness, a strain, a contusion, or another problem? When can I return to practice? Which techniques and exercises are suitable now? What signs mean I should stop activity?

Questions people ask
Can sports massage treat a muscle tear?
It cannot repair a tear. A suspected tear needs assessment and a rehabilitation plan matched to its severity and stage of healing.
Can I have massage for calf pain?
Not before the cause is clear. Calf pain with swelling, warmth, or breathing symptoms needs prompt medical assessment.
