What should you know about massage and manual therapy for orthopedic conditions?

Short answer
Massage and manual therapy may ease muscle tension and improve movement, but they should match the cause of your symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What hands-on treatment does
Massage works mainly on soft tissues such as muscle and fascia. Manual therapy can also include guided joint movements, gentle mobilisation, and techniques that support range of motion. A clinician first considers your symptoms, strength, sensation, movement, injury history, and medical conditions. Treatment may be useful for muscle guarding or stiffness, but it does not repair every structural problem and should not delay assessment of a serious injury. Examples of conditions where hands-on care may be included are [Cervical Spondylosis](/conditions/cervical-spondylosis/), [Myofascial Pain Syndrome](/conditions/myofascial-pain-syndrome/), [Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction](/conditions/sacroiliac-joint-dysfunction/), and [Whiplash](/conditions/whiplash/).
Making a session safer and more useful
Tell the therapist about recent injuries, surgery, osteoporosis, blood-thinning medicine, numbness, skin problems, and pain that travels down an arm or leg. The session should use a pressure and movement level you can tolerate, with changes made if symptoms flare. Pairing treatment with exercises, posture or activity changes, and gradual strengthening often makes the effect more practical. Ask how to judge a normal short-lived ache versus a worsening symptom. More detail is available in [Manual Therapy](/treatments/manual-and-manipulative-therapy/manual-therapy/).
When massage is not the next step
Arrange medical assessment before treatment for a new major injury, unexplained swelling, fever, severe night pain, progressive weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Stop a session and seek advice if you develop sharp worsening pain, new numbness, marked weakness, dizziness, or unusual bruising. Sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing needs emergency care.
Questions for your doctor
What is causing my symptoms, and is hands-on treatment appropriate? Which movements or areas should be avoided? How should massage fit with exercise or medication? What response would mean the treatment needs to be changed?

Questions people ask
Can massage cure an orthopedic condition?
Massage may help symptoms and movement, but its effect depends on the condition and it does not correct every underlying structural problem.
Is stronger pressure more effective?
No. Pressure should be appropriate for the tissue, diagnosis, and your response; painful or worsening symptoms should prompt a change in technique.
