Mass on the Kidney and Blood in the Urine: What to Know

Blood may be visible as pink, red, or cola-coloured urine, or it may be found only on a urine test. A mass may have been noticed during an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI done for another reason. These findings should be considered together, but one does not prove the cause of the other.

A kidney mass can be a fluid-filled cyst, a non-cancerous growth, or a cancerous growth. Its appearance, size, position, and change over time help clinicians decide what happens next. Blood in the urine can also come from the bladder, ureters, prostate, or urinary tract rather than the kidney mass itself.

Other explanations include kidney stones, a urinary tract infection, kidney infection, inflammation of the prostate, or prostate enlargement. Less common causes include inherited blood disorders such as sickle cell disease. Bladder Cancer and Prostate Cancer are conditions clinicians may consider when the symptoms and examination fit; blood in the urine does not by itself establish either diagnosis.

Arrange a timely appointment with a doctor or the clinician who requested the scan. Bring the imaging report, a list of medicines, and details about when the blood appeared. Mention pain in the side or back, fever, burning when urinating, clots, changes in urine flow, weight change, or previous urinary problems.

Assessment may include repeat urine testing, blood tests, a physical examination, and review of the actual scan images. Depending on the findings, a clinician may arrange further imaging, referral to a urologist, monitoring, or a procedure to obtain tissue. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice; tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines and strenuous exercise.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, are passing large clots, or the bleeding is heavy or continuing. Go urgently as well for severe flank or abdominal pain, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, or fever with chills, especially if you feel generally very unwell.

Those symptoms can signal urinary blockage, significant blood loss, a stone, or a serious infection. Even without pain, visible blood in the urine should be assessed rather than watched indefinitely, particularly when a kidney finding has already been reported.

Ask what type of kidney mass the report describes, whether it is solid or fluid-filled, and whether the images need specialist review. Ask whether the blood appears to come from the kidney or another part of the urinary system, which tests are planned, and how quickly they should be completed.
