What should you know about MAR letrozole?

Letrozole is an aromatase inhibitor that lowers oestrogen production and must be taken according to the prescribed cancer-care plan. It is commonly considered for hormone-sensitive breast cancer, including after other treatment or around menopause, but the reason and duration vary. It is not interchangeable with another medicine without advice from the oncology team.

Aromatase is an enzyme involved in making oestrogen in tissues outside the ovaries. Letrozole blocks aromatase, reducing the oestrogen signal available to hormone-sensitive cancer cells. The medicine may be supplied as a tablet and is intended for regular use. Common concerns include joint or muscle aches, hot flushes, tiredness, headache, mood changes, and vaginal or sexual symptoms. Bone health, cholesterol, other medicines, and pregnancy considerations may need review.

Take letrozole exactly as prescribed and keep a consistent routine. If you miss a dose, follow the instructions from your treatment team or the medicine information supplied to you rather than doubling doses. Tell the team about severe joint symptoms, low mood, new vaginal bleeding, liver problems, or medicines and supplements you take. Do not stop treatment because of manageable side effects without discussing alternatives or supportive measures.

Contact your care team promptly for severe or sudden bone pain, a fall or suspected fracture, marked weakness, yellowing of the skin, unusual bleeding, or a severe allergic reaction. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, or sudden neurological symptoms. A routine review can address persistent aches, sleep disruption, or emotional changes before they interfere with daily life.

Ask why letrozole is recommended, how long the planned course may last, and whether your menopausal status changes the choice. Ask how bone density, vitamin needs, joint symptoms, and interactions with other medicines will be monitored. Clarify exactly what to do after a missed tablet or troublesome side effect.
