What should you know about manual therapy mulligan?

Short answer
Mulligan manual therapy combines a sustained joint glide with active movement chosen to reduce symptoms and improve function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the approach works
In a typical session, the physiotherapist positions or supports a joint while you perform a movement that is normally stiff or uncomfortable. The therapist adjusts the direction and amount of assistance based on your response. A suitable technique should allow the movement to feel easier rather than force you through sharp pain.
The approach may be considered for selected neck, back or limb movement problems, including symptoms associated with [Cervical Spondylosis](/conditions/cervical-spondylosis/) or [Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction](/conditions/sacroiliac-joint-dysfunction/). It is an individual technique, not a promise that every painful movement has one correct correction.
What happens in practice
Before treatment, explain the exact movement that is limited, what eases it, and any pins and needles, dizziness or recent trauma. During the technique, keep communicating about pressure and symptom changes. Your physiotherapist may reassess the movement immediately and then teach a self-management exercise or a modified version for home.
Use the home exercise only as instructed, with controlled motion and the advised frequency. A temporary change in symptoms can be useful information, but it should be discussed alongside your overall function, sleep and ability to manage daily tasks.
When to stop treatment
Pause treatment and arrange medical assessment for new weakness, spreading numbness, severe unsteadiness, fainting, a severe headache after neck treatment or pain that rapidly escalates. Following an injury such as [Whiplash](/conditions/whiplash/), seek urgent care for severe neck pain with weakness, confusion or difficulty walking.
Questions for your clinician
What movement are we testing? How will you know the glide is helping? Should the technique feel comfortable throughout? What is my home alternative if symptoms change? When will we review the plan?

Questions people ask
Should a Mulligan technique hurt?
It should not require forcing through sharp pain; tell the clinician immediately if symptoms worsen or change unexpectedly.
Is the approach suitable for everyone?
Suitability depends on the diagnosis, examination findings, injury history and medical conditions, so assessment comes first.
