What should you know about manual muscle therapy?

Short answer
Manual muscle therapy is hands-on treatment that assesses muscle tension, movement and tenderness, then uses pressure or guided movement to support rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the treatment involves
A physiotherapist may examine how a joint moves, how a muscle contracts and whether nearby tissues are sensitive. Treatment can include gentle pressure, soft-tissue work, assisted movement or muscle activation. The approach may be used alongside exercises for problems such as Cervical Spondylosis, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction or Whiplash. It is part of broader [Manual Therapy](/treatments/manual-and-manipulative-therapy/manual-therapy/), not a replacement for finding the cause of persistent pain.
How to prepare and take part
Wear clothing that allows the affected area to be examined. Tell the therapist about recent injuries, numbness, skin problems, medication, and any change in strength. During treatment, describe whether pressure feels helpful, sharp, burning or too intense. Follow the home movement plan at a comfortable level; mild temporary tenderness can occur, but worsening pain should be reported before the next session.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical assessment for new loss of bladder or bowel control, severe weakness, fainting, chest pain, or sudden trouble speaking or walking. Contact a clinician promptly for pain after a major injury, progressive numbness, fever with a hot swollen area, or symptoms that keep worsening. A therapist should reassess treatment when symptoms spread or strength changes.
Questions to ask
Which muscle or movement problem are we treating? What should I feel during and after a session? Which exercises should accompany the hands-on work? How will we judge whether the plan needs changing?

Questions people ask
Is manual muscle therapy the same as massage?
It can include soft-tissue techniques, but a physiotherapist links the hands-on work to an assessment, movement goals and rehabilitation exercises.
Should treatment hurt?
Treatment should remain tolerable. Tell the therapist if pressure causes sharp pain, spreading symptoms or a marked flare.
