Manifestations of DVT: symptoms to know

A DVT is a blood clot in a deep vein, often in the leg. Symptoms may affect one calf or thigh and can include tenderness, a feeling of tightness, skin that feels warmer than the other side, or redness and darkening. The symptoms can resemble a muscle strain, so an examination and tests are needed to tell them apart. A clot can sometimes travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism, which is a medical emergency.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new one-sided leg swelling or unexplained calf pain, especially after an operation, prolonged travel, reduced movement, pregnancy, or a previous clot. Do not massage the painful area or start blood-thinning medicine without medical advice. A clinician may assess your history, examine the limb, and arrange an ultrasound or other testing.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden breathlessness, chest pain that worsens with breathing, coughing up blood, fainting, or a racing heartbeat alongside possible leg symptoms. These signs can indicate a clot has reached the lungs. Seek same-day care for rapidly increasing swelling, pain, or skin colour change even if breathing is normal.

Ask whether your symptoms need an ultrasound, which factors may have raised your clot risk, and what activity is safe while you are being assessed. If treatment is prescribed, ask how to take it, what bleeding symptoms to report, and how follow-up will be arranged.
