What Does Mammogram Mean in Women?

A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast used to look for changes in breast tissue, including areas that may need further assessment. It may be used for routine screening when you have no breast symptoms, or as a diagnostic test when a symptom or examination finding needs a closer look.

During the test, each breast is placed between two plates so that clear images can be taken. The brief compression helps reduce movement and allows breast tissue to be seen in detail. You may feel pressure or discomfort, but the imaging itself is quick. A radiologist reviews the images for findings such as a lump, small calcium deposits, an area of distortion, or a difference between the breasts.

An unusual image does not by itself diagnose cancer. Dense breast tissue, overlapping tissue, cysts, benign growths, or technical factors can affect how an image looks. Your clinician may recommend additional views, ultrasound, comparison with earlier images, or another test to clarify the finding.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have had breast surgery. On the day of the appointment, avoid deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on the breasts and underarms because these products can create marks on the images. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up.

After the mammogram, you can generally return to your usual activities. Keep the appointment or follow-up plan provided by the clinic, particularly if the report requests extra imaging. If you have a new breast symptom, mention it even when a recent mammogram was reassuring; imaging is one part of the assessment.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new breast lump, a persistent change in breast shape or skin, nipple discharge that is bloody or occurs without squeezing, a nipple that becomes newly drawn inward, or swelling in the breast or underarm. Do not wait for routine screening if one of these changes appears.

Seek prompt medical advice for a breast that becomes red, hot, markedly swollen, or increasingly painful, especially if you also feel unwell or have a fever. These features can have causes that need treatment and should be assessed rather than interpreted from a mammogram alone.
