What should you know about mammogram for men?

Men have breast tissue, so a mammogram may be used for a new lump, nipple discharge, skin change, pain in one area, or a change found during examination. The breast is positioned between plates while X-ray images are taken. The pressure is brief but can feel uncomfortable. Imaging may help distinguish glandular tissue, a cyst, a benign growth, or a suspicious area; a result still needs clinical interpretation.

Tell the team about prior breast surgery, implants, medicines, hormone treatment, and the exact location of your symptom. Do not apply deodorant or powder if the centre asks you to avoid products before imaging. Bring earlier reports or images when possible. Depending on the findings, the next step may be ultrasound, additional mammographic views, biopsy, or another specialist review.

Book a clinical assessment for a new firm lump, nipple discharge, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, persistent one-sided pain, or an enlarged node in the armpit. Seek urgent help for a hot, red, swollen breast with fever or rapidly worsening pain. Do not postpone review because breast cancer is less common in men; a symptom still deserves a clear explanation.

Ask why mammography is suitable, whether ultrasound should be added, what the images show, whether tissue sampling is needed, how results will be communicated, and which changes should prompt earlier contact.
