What should you know about malignant pleural effusion ovarian cancer?

A pleural effusion is extra fluid between the lung and chest wall. In someone with ovarian cancer, clinicians assess whether ovarian cancer cells are present in the fluid and whether another condition could be contributing. They may use chest imaging, drainage for laboratory analysis and, when necessary, a tissue sample. The result is considered alongside ovarian cancer pathology and the wider pattern seen on scans.

Fluid can make the lung harder to expand, causing breathlessness, cough or chest heaviness. The care plan may include drainage, a pleural catheter or another pleural procedure. Treatment for ovarian cancer may also be adjusted according to the cancer’s extent, previous therapy and the person’s priorities. Palliative care can help with symptoms during any stage of this process.

Tell both the respiratory and gynaecological oncology teams about breathlessness, reduced activity, pain and how quickly symptoms changed. Ask whether fluid analysis is sufficient and whether more tissue is needed. Discuss how drainage could affect comfort, how recurrence would be handled and whether ovarian cancer treatment could help control the fluid. Keep a written list of medicines and bring recent scan or pathology reports to appointments.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue lips or sudden confusion. Contact the treating team quickly for fever, worsening cough, new weakness or signs of infection after drainage. A rapid change in breathing should not be attributed to the cancer without assessment, because infection, a clot and procedure-related problems can also cause urgent symptoms.
