What should you know about malignant melanoma superficial spreading type?

Short answer

Malignant melanoma of superficial spreading type is a melanoma that commonly grows across the upper skin before deeper invasion, so changing lesions need timely examination and biopsy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pattern
Often begins with growth across the upper skin before deeper invasion.
Confirmation
Biopsy and pathology establish the subtype and key features.
Main treatment
Surgical excision is commonly considered for a localised lesion.

The short answer

Superficial spreading melanoma is a melanoma subtype in which abnormal cells commonly spread across the upper layers of skin before a deeper vertical growth phase. It may appear as a flat or slightly raised patch with uneven colour or an irregular outline. The subtype name is confirmed by pathology, not by appearance alone.

What this subtype means

A lesion can contain shades of brown, black, pink, red, blue or white, and it may change gradually or noticeably. A biopsy allows the pathologist to assess thickness, ulceration, margins and other features that matter more for treatment planning than the subtype label alone.

When the melanoma is confined to the skin, surgical excision is usually central to care. The team may discuss a sentinel lymph-node biopsy or other staging if the pathology and clinical findings support it. If disease has spread, oncology specialists may consider immunotherapy or other coordinated treatment.

What to do next

Arrange a skin examination for a new or changing patch, especially one that differs from your other marks. Bring a timeline or earlier photographs if available. Do not rely on colour, size or a phone image to decide whether a lesion is safe, and do not remove it yourself.

After treatment, learn how to inspect the scar, nearby skin and the rest of your body. Protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light and attend the follow-up visits recommended by your team.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment for a mark with an expanding or uneven border, multiple colours, a new lump, crusting, bleeding, persistent itch or a sore that does not heal. Contact urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly worsening infection around a biopsy wound, or new severe symptoms such as weakness or difficulty breathing. These signs require assessment but do not diagnose melanoma by themselves.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the lesion needs biopsy, what its thickness and margins show, whether a sentinel-node procedure is suitable, how much skin surgery will remove, and how you should monitor for another changing lesion.

Questions people ask

Can a superficial spreading melanoma be diagnosed from a photograph?

No. A photograph may show change, but examination and tissue pathology are needed for diagnosis and treatment planning.

Does the subtype determine the whole outlook?

No. Thickness, ulceration, margins, lymph-node findings and other staging information also influence care decisions.
