Male urinary urgency treatment: what to know

Urgency is a sudden, difficult-to-delay need to pass urine. It may occur with frequent urination, night-time visits, burning, a weak stream, or leakage. A urinary tract infection can cause urgency, especially when burning or cloudy urine is present. Prostatitis may cause urinary symptoms with pelvic discomfort or fever. Benign prostate enlargement can narrow the urine outlet and leave the bladder working harder. The symptom alone does not identify one diagnosis, so clinicians consider its timing, associated symptoms, medicines, fluid intake, and prostate history.

Arrange a medical assessment if urgency is new, persistent, troublesome, or affecting sleep. A clinician may ask for a urine sample, review medicines and drinks such as caffeine, and examine the abdomen or prostate when appropriate. Treatment could involve antibiotics for a confirmed infection, medicines that relax the bladder outlet or calm bladder contractions, or management of prostate enlargement. Do not use leftover antibiotics. Keep a brief record of drinks, urination, urgency, pain, and leakage; this helps match treatment to the pattern. Until reviewed, avoid holding urine for long periods and moderate drinks that clearly trigger symptoms.

Seek urgent medical care if you cannot pass urine, have fever with chills, severe lower abdominal or back pain, vomiting, confusion, or visible blood in the urine. These features can signal a problem needing prompt assessment. If urgency is accompanied by new weakness, numbness around the groin, or loss of bowel control, seek emergency help.
