Male rigid cystoscopy: what to know

A rigid cystoscope is a narrow, straight instrument with a light and camera. It is passed through the opening of the penis into the urethra and bladder so the clinician can inspect the lining. Local, regional or general anaesthesia may be used according to the planned procedure and your health. The examination can identify inflammation, narrowing, stones, bleeding sources or changes that need further testing. A small tissue sample or another procedure may sometimes be taken during the same appointment.

The camera view does not by itself explain every abnormal finding. If a suspicious area is seen, the clinician may recommend laboratory examination of a sample and further imaging or treatment planning.

Follow the instructions about fasting, medicines and transport if anaesthesia is planned. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, urinary infections and difficulty passing urine. Afterward, drink fluids as advised and follow the discharge instructions. Mild burning when passing urine, urinary frequency or a small amount of blood can occur briefly. Avoid strenuous activity for the period your clinician recommends, especially if a sample or additional procedure was taken.

Contact the treating service urgently if you cannot pass urine, develop fever or chills, have worsening pain, heavy bleeding or clots, or feel increasingly unwell after the procedure. These symptoms can indicate infection, significant bleeding or blockage and should not be managed by waiting at home.

Ask why a rigid cystoscopy is recommended, which anaesthetic is planned, whether a biopsy or treatment could happen during it, when results will be available, and which medicines or activities need adjustment. Ask what to do if urinary burning or blood continues.
