What should you know about male cystoscopy painful?

During cystoscopy, a clinician passes a narrow camera through the urethra to view the bladder. Pressure, the urge to urinate and stinging can occur as the camera passes or as fluid fills the bladder. A flexible examination often uses numbing gel, while some procedures use sedation or anaesthesia depending on what is planned. Discomfort varies with the person, the urethra, the procedure and whether tissue sampling or another treatment is performed.

Tell the team if you have had difficult catheterisation, urinary narrowing, an infection, allergies to gels or medicines, or strong anxiety about the procedure. Ask what type of anaesthesia is planned and whether you need someone to take you home. Afterward, follow fluid and medicine instructions, rest as advised and expect the team to explain what findings need follow-up. Report symptoms rather than treating severe discomfort alone.

Mild burning when passing urine or a small amount of blood can occur after cystoscopy, but contact the clinic for worsening pain, fever, chills, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, persistent bleeding or difficulty passing urine. Seek emergency help for inability to urinate, heavy bleeding, severe lower abdominal pain, confusion or rapidly worsening illness.

Ask why cystoscopy is recommended, how the camera will be passed, which pain-control option is planned, whether a biopsy may be taken and when results will be discussed. Ask which after-effects are expected, which are concerning and whom to contact outside office hours.
