What should you know about malassezia folliculitis on scalp?

This condition involves inflammation around scalp hair follicles associated with Malassezia yeast. The bumps may be small, similar in size, and itchy rather than deeply tender. Heat, sweat, tight headwear, oily products, or changes in the scalp environment can make symptoms more noticeable.

Scalp folliculitis can coexist with flaking or seborrheic dermatitis. Bacterial folliculitis, acne-like eruptions, psoriasis, eczema, and irritation from hair products can produce similar findings. Examination of the scalp and hairline helps guide the choice of treatment.

A medicated shampoo may be used to reduce yeast on the scalp and hairline. Follow the label or prescription directions for contact time and frequency, and rinse well.
