Malaria: description, symptoms, and next steps

An infected mosquito can pass malaria parasites into the bloodstream. The parasites multiply in blood cells and may produce cycles of fever, chills, sweating, headache, tiredness, and muscle aches. Symptoms can resemble other infections, so a description alone cannot confirm malaria. In severe cases, the infection may affect the brain, breathing, blood circulation, or organs.

Tell a clinician about travel to or residence in a malaria-risk area, including dates and prevention medicines. A blood test can look for evidence of infection, and the clinician may arrange additional testing if suspicion remains. If treatment is prescribed, take it as directed and do not stop because symptoms improve. Keep a record of new symptoms and medicines.

Seek emergency help for confusion, a seizure, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or inability to drink. Any unexplained fever after possible malaria exposure needs prompt medical advice, even when chills are absent. Mention pregnancy or a weakened immune system because these circumstances can change the assessment.
