What should you know about malaria blood test?

Blood testing may assess blood cells, inflammation, organ function or evidence of infection. A clinician chooses tests according to the symptom pattern and examination. Fatigue, fever and abnormal blood results can occur with conditions such as anaemia, dengue fever, glandular fever, brucellosis, coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, chronic kidney disease or chronic fatigue syndrome. The result is one part of the clinical picture.

Write down when symptoms began, recent travel, medicines, fever episodes and changes in weight, appetite or bowel habits. Ask whether you need to fast or change a medicine before the sample; follow the laboratory's instructions rather than guessing. Bring earlier results when available, and ask when and how your clinician will explain the findings.

Get urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, heavy bleeding, chest pain or inability to drink. A routine blood-test appointment is not suitable for rapidly worsening symptoms. Fever after travel also deserves prompt review, especially when accompanied by chills or marked weakness.

Ask which tests are planned, what each result can and cannot show, whether repeat sampling is needed, and which result or symptom would change the next step.
