Main symptoms of angina

Short answer
Angina commonly causes pressure, tightness, squeezing, or heaviness in the chest during activity or emotional stress.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What angina symptoms can feel like
The discomfort may spread to the shoulder, arm, neck, jaw, back, or upper abdomen. Some people notice breathlessness, sweating, nausea, dizziness, or unusual tiredness rather than obvious chest pain. Symptoms often appear when the heart needs more oxygen, such as while walking uphill, and may ease with rest. Chest tightness has several possible causes, so its pattern needs medical assessment; it does not by itself establish angina.
What to do when symptoms start
Stop the activity, sit upright, and follow any action plan or prescribed medicine you have been given. Make a note of what you were doing, how the sensation felt, how long it lasted, and whether it returned. Arrange a clinical review for new, recurring, or changing symptoms. An ECG may be part of the assessment, alongside a review of blood pressure and cardiovascular risk.
When chest symptoms are urgent
Seek emergency help for chest pressure or tightness that is severe, lasts longer than expected, occurs at rest, or does not settle with your prescribed plan. Urgent assessment is also needed with marked breathlessness, fainting, cold sweating, confusion, or discomfort spreading to the jaw or arm. Do not drive yourself if you feel seriously unwell.
Questions to take to an appointment
Ask what pattern your symptoms suggest, which tests are appropriate, how to use prescribed treatment, and which changes should prompt emergency help. Discuss whether blood pressure or cholesterol management could reduce strain on the heart.

Questions people ask
Can angina occur without sharp pain?
Yes. It may feel like pressure, heaviness, burning, or tightness, and some people mainly notice breathlessness or fatigue.
Is every episode of chest tightness angina?
No. Chest tightness can have many causes, so new or changing symptoms should be assessed by a clinician.
